So apparently we need to pick our base pref right away... Any pros/cons you guys have heard of? I heard good and bad things about Whiting, but more bad because coming back to the AF afterwards sucks. Is there a real big difference between Navy/AF/ENJJPT UPT? What about Vance vs Columbus vs Laughlin? Any light shed on this topic would be appreciated. Thanks.

OMG GO TO Whiting if you have a choice!!!! BEST location out of all the UPT bases, they're flying the newest T-6's (with the F-16 HUD too) and it's super chill. I think it's funny that it sucks coming back into the AF afterwards, that's because it's so awesome while you're there. My best friend from the Academy is there now and he's having a blast. Only part that sucks is they have to do navy water survival, which involves swimming a mile in full flight suit, boots and helmet.

I'm a FAIP (First Assignment Instructor Pilot) at Columbus now, so you gotta take this with a grain of salt. Columbus is definitely better than Vance or Laughlin when it comes to weather conditions. That is, we get a lot more cloudy (read shitty- that tornado that ripped through Mississippi last weekend killed 10 people near here. We had sirens going off all day) weather. Because of that as a student you're going to do more actual instrument approaches instead of clear weather day "instrument" approaches.
Location wise- Laughlin is probably the worse. It's right on the border with Mexico, in the middle of nowhere, and they're not even allowed to cross the border anymore to party due to all the drug violence.
Vance and Columbus I hear are in similarly small towns, though Columbus has a Walmart SUPERcenter vs Vance's plain old Walmart.

Ultimately the training you're going to get at any of the big 3 V/C/L is going to be the same. It's all about where you want to spend the first year to year and a half after graduation.

I thought you had to apply for Sheppard separately since it's where ENJJPT is located; everyone flies T-38's.
Maybe they changed things since I was at the Academy. If you wanna go fast and be guaranteed it Sheppard would go first. I hope it's not too late.

Sheppard is no longer guaranteed fighters, I think the policy now is you are guaranteed the T-38s but you can still get heavies after completing training. Sometimes other bases have more students get fighters than ENJJPT, thats what Ive heard.

When the hell did Sheppard get added to the list?

My choices were Pensacola NAS, Whitting, Laughlin, Vance, and Columbus.

I of course got Laughlin (I'm going there in October) A friend of mine is at Laughlin right now and says it's not that bad.

I've heard the downside to Whitting and Pensacola is Phase 3 is not done at either location and thus you're moved.

Anyways everyone is pretty much going to put a similar order to the one you chose so it's all kind of luck of the draw and when you get activated. I leave may 18th for ASBC.
